Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that primarily affects the colon (large intestine) and rectum. It is characterized by inflammation and ulcers in the lining of the colon. The signs and symptoms of ulcerative colitis can vary depending on the extent and severity of the inflammation. Here are some common signs and symptoms:

1. Diarrhea: Diarrhea is a hallmark symptom of ulcerative colitis. The stools may be frequent, urgent, and watery, and they may contain blood or mucus.

2. Abdominal pain and cramping: Individuals with ulcerative colitis often experience abdominal pain and cramping, typically located in the lower left side of the abdomen. The pain may range from mild to severe and can occur both during active disease periods and during remission.

3. Rectal bleeding: Inflammation and ulcers in the rectum and colon can lead to rectal bleeding. Blood may be visible in the stool or appear as bright red blood on toilet paper.

4. Urgency to have a bowel movement: The inflammation in the colon can cause a frequent and urgent need to have a bowel movement. This can lead to difficulties in controlling bowel movements (fecal incontinence).

5. Fatigue and weakness: Chronic inflammation and the body’s immune response can result in fatigue and a general feeling of weakness.

6. Loss of appetite and weight loss: Reduced appetite and unintentional weight loss are common symptoms of ulcerative colitis. The chronic inflammation can affect the absorption and processing of nutrients.

7. Anemia: Chronic inflammation and bleeding from the colon can lead to a decrease in red blood cell count, resulting in anemia. Anemia can cause fatigue, weakness, and pale skin.

8. Joint pain: Some individuals with ulcerative colitis may experience joint pain and swelling, similar to arthritis.

9. Skin problems: Skin manifestations can occur in ulcerative colitis, including rashes, sores, and ulcers.

10. Eye inflammation: Inflammation can also affect the eyes, causing symptoms such as redness, pain, and blurred vision.
